Podcasting advice from expert Tricia Friedman
I love podcasts!
And I bet you have your favourite podcasts lined up in Spotify or iTunes or your favourite podcatcher, right?
Podcasts continue to grow in popularity and involve millions and millions of listeners around the world, including many young people. Did you know that 50% of monthly U.S. podcast listeners are between the ages of 12-34? (source)
Podcasts are a wonderful way to synthesize information, convey personal ideas and passions, and engage in civic dialogue about all manner of local and global issues. That makes them a powerful advocacy tool for our students, and students of all ages can create podcasts for your school community or wider audience.
As an example, here is a podcast episode featuring grade 5 students at Mernda Primary School in Australia. Students created a “Going Global” podcast to explore what they were learning about the cultural backgrounds of peers, which is pretty amazing. They learned some excellent interview and presentation skills to create their podcast episodes, and used deep and empathetic listening during the process of planning and executing their podcast.
Another student podcast I want to share is one created by a high school senior a few years ago about food waste. Iffany Z (a student at Concordia International School Shanghai) created this podcast for her Global Development Studies class and later won first place in a SIMA contest for student media. Pretty fabulous!
I was SO lucky to meet expert podcaster Tricia Friedman at an ECIS Leadership Conference last spring, and we were able to connect and talk about podcasting this summer. I am excited to share our conversation with you, and I know you’ll pick up lots of ideas and tips for how to engage your students with podcasting in the 2023/24 school year.
